SCAM AWARENESS PRESENTATION
Officer Don Swanson will lead a free, in-depth Scam Awareness presentation from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
This is not a generic lecture. It is a practical, real-world conversation about how scams are happening right now and how residents can recognize the warning signs before money is lost.
Attendees will learn:
- The exact tactics scammers are currently using
- Why smart, cautious people still fall victim
- The red flags that signal fraud
- What to do immediately if targeted
- How reporting quickly can prevent others from being victimized
Criminals are becoming more sophisticated. They spoof phone numbers. They impersonate government agencies. They create convincing online identities. Awareness is no longer optional - it is essential.
“The most powerful tool we have against scammers is an informed community,” said Officer Don Swanson. “When residents know what to look for and how to respond, we reduce victimization citywide.”
This presentation is about prevention. It is about protecting hard-earned savings. It is about ensuring our seniors, families, and neighbors are not isolated or exploited. It is about strengthening trust between law enforcement and the community so that suspicious activity is reported quickly and addressed effectively.
Think you’re too smart to be scammed? So do most victims. Come test your knowledge, strengthen your defenses, and learn how to help protect others who may be more vulnerable. Seats are free. The information is invaluable. Your awareness could make all the difference. Please register here.

Common Scams, according to the Federal Trade Commission
Impersonator Scams
Scammers pretend to be someone they are not, such as, tech support, government officials, or a business of some kind. Other types of impersonator scams are romance scams or grandkid scams, which play on the emotions of the victims.
Health Insurance Scam
An example of this type of scam is: you have Medicare, but the caller says you need a new card.
"You've Won!" Scam
It seems like you have won a prize, but you can't collect your money or prize without sending money to a third party.
Home Repair Scam
Someone offers to repair your home for a cheap price, for cash, right NOW.
Money-Making Scam
Ads promise that you will make large amounts of money working from home, but there's a fee to pay upfront.
Investment Scam
An ad promises quick and easy money that is guaranteed. No risk to you
Charity Fraud
Someone asks you to donate money to a charity, TODAY. Remember, legitimate charities don't mind if you ask questions, and don't have an immediate, extreme need for your donation right this minute.
If you've been a victim, please contact your local law enforcement.
