On Friday, January 17, 2025, Livermore Police officers conducted compliance checks at six local businesses to ensure they were adhering to California’s state law prohibiting the sale of flavored tobacco products.
The California Department of Justice bans the retail sale of most flavored tobacco products and tobacco product flavor enhancers, imposing fines of $50 per prohibited product for violations.
Two businesses were found to be non-compliant. At one business, officers seized various illegal products including psilocybin mushrooms and enhancers. The owner could face up to $68,000 in fines.
At another business, a plainclothes officer was sold flavored tobacco. Following an inspection, all flavored tobacco products were seized. That owner could face up to $7,500 in fines.
In addition to the recent enforcement, Livermore Police conducted similar compliance checks in December, seizing additional illegal products.
These enforcement activities are supported by an $82,000 three-year tobacco enforcement grant from the California Department of Justice. This funding allows Livermore Police to perform inspections, conduct compliance checks, and use minor decoys to address illegal tobacco sales.
